Keio University

The East building of Keio University facing Sakurada-dori Avenue has an outstanding classical facade.

Enter the Mita Campus via the East Gate under the arch that goes through the building.

You will see the solemn old library that has been designated an important national cultural property when you go the stairs of the arcade and along the slope.

It is a red-brick-and-white-granite western-style gothic structure with the look of academia, and was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the University’s founding.

There is a big beautiful clock on the outer wall and the octagonal red-brick tower is a symbol of Mita Campus. Inside, above the staircase in the entrance hall, is a famous stained-glass window with the quote, “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

The statue of Fukuzawa Yukichi to the left of the entrance is a recommended photo spot.

After passing through the East arcade and under the bridge, you will see the “Illusion Gate” or East Gate, which has been moved to the top of the slope.

The Umadomeishi, a stone at which Yukichi is said to have rested his horse, has also been moved to the side of the slope.

Another historical building, also designated an important cultural property is the “Mita Enzetsukan.” This building, Japan ’s first speakers‚ hall, was built in 1875.

It is located to the left on top of the hill. The wooden structure has a tile roof and Namako-kabe (walls covered with square tiles jointed with raised plaster). It is said that Yukichi was the one who translated the English word “speech” as “enzetsu” in Japanese.

“Heiwarai”

There are many other historical buildings and works of art on this campus. For example in the entrance hall of the library there is a bronze statue, “Heiwarai” (Coming of Peace) by Fumio Asakura and literary monuments in the small park on the east side. The monuments are dedicated to the poets Haruo Sato, Hideo Yoshino and the haiku author, Mantaro Kubota.

A new building, a collaboration between the architect Kengo Kuma and world famous landscape designer Michel Devigne, was opened in March 2005 and houses “Banraisha” by Yoshiro Taniguchi and Isamu Noguchi.

There is no admission charge for individuals. Ask the Administration Office for a map of the campus map to help you enjoy the historical buildings and works of art.
