Hoju-in (Benzai-ten)
The goddess, Benzai-ten, worshipped at this temple is said to confer wealth and success. A 7-8-minute walk from Kumano Jinja, it might be nice to stop at Tokyo Tower along the way before visiting this shrine. Hoju-in was established in Jokyo 2 (1685) by Zojoji’s 30th chief priest, Reigen Shonin, at the same time as the Benten-do was constructed. The precincts resemble a park, making you forget that you are in the middle of a city. The trees surrounding Zojo-ji and the pond, Benten-ike, in the center relieve the fatigue from your walk. In addition to the vermilion Benten-do is a hall housing a two-meter tall wooden carving of Emma-Daio (Minato City Designated Cultural Property).
