Daiho-ji (Daikoku-ten)
Daikoku-ten, to whom this temple is dedicated, is the grantor of good luck and prosperity. Walk down the Ipponmatsu-zaka hill in front of Hikawa Jinja and you will come to the point at which three hills meet: Daikoku-zaka goes from the stone marker at Ipponmatsu to Daiho-ji; Kurayami-zaka, site of the Austrian Embassy, meanders down in the center; and Tanuki-zaka leads off to the left. For this reason, local residents fondly refer to the shrine as Ipponmatsu no Daikoku-sama, rather than Daiho-ji. The temple was established in Keicho 2 (1597). A fox deity (Inari-sama) is enshrined to the left just inside the two-story-tall main gate. The mame-maki (bean-throwning) ceremony held each year on Setsubun (February 3) is very popular. Beans are thrown around the temple precincts to chase away ogres and welcome good fortune; after the ceremony, festival floats bearing lucky bean-throwers are drawn through nearby streets such as Patio-dori and Juban-dori in a Mame-maki Parade.
