Hisakuni Jinja (Hotei-son)

This shrine is dedicated to Hotei-son, believed to be the god of happiness and prosperity. OOTA Dokan donated the sacred sword made by Hisakuni, a master swordsmith during the Kamakura Period; hence, the shrine is revered as Hisakuni Inari Dai-Myojin. Ascending the stairs, you are greeted by a pair of guardian dogs; on the right in the cozy precincts stand two large stone lanterns. Further into the precincts is the main shrine structure. The tablet in the main hall was written by KATSU Kaishu. Trees from the adjoining American Embassy residence compound overhang the shrine precincts and if you look over your shoulder, you can see the forest of tall buildings surrounding Ark Hills. Papers telling your fortune in Japanese and in English are labeled Dai-kichi (Excellent) or Kichi (Very Good).
