Reinan-zaka
Reinan-zaka is a somewhat steep slope running between the Hotel Okura and the American Embassy. Reinan, a highly respected Buddhist priest as well as the military strategy instructor for both TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and TOKUGAWA Hidetada, the first and second Shoguns, established a temple, Reinan-an, in this area. That temple gave the slope its name and somewhere along the way, the original character for “rei” (meaning summit) was changed to the current character (meaning divinity). Reinan-an has since moved to Takanawa and is now Tozen-ji Temple (3-16-16 Takanawa; Minato-ku). Tozen-ji Temple also served as the location of the first British Consulate. If you turn right at the crossroads at the top of the slope, you will see Reinan-zaka Church; Edomi-zaka is on the left.
Location:
Between 1-10 Akasaka and 2-10 Toranomon; Minato-ku
