Shiomi-zaka
This gentle 10-meter-wide slope runs between the Hotel Okura and the National Printing Bureau (formerly the Printing Bureau of the Finance Ministry). As the name suggests, until the middle of the Edo Era, one could see across Edo to the bay from this slope. The site on which the Hotel Okura stands today was once occupied by the main residence in Edo of MATSUDAIRA Yamato-no-kami of the Musashi Kawagoe fiefdom, so the slope was also called Yamato-zaka. The site of the Printing Bureau was occupied by the secondary residence of NABESHIMA of the Hizen Saga fiefdom. Nissho Hall (Japan Firemen’s Hall) at the bottom of the hill stands on the site of the residence of the Inspector General SENGOKU Hoki-no-kami, where two of the 47 loyal retainers (of Chushingura fame), YOSHIDA Chuzaemon and TOMINOMORI Sukeemon, presented “The Statement of the Retainers of Asano Takumi-no-kami” announcing the particulars of their deed after carrying out their raid. It is said that OISHI Kuranosuke, dressed as he was when he carried out his mission, was temporarily detained here. There is also a monument marking the place where a well once existed.
