Edomi-zaka
This is a steep slope about eight meters wide running alongside the Hotel Okura. With a 20% incline, it is known as one of the steepest slopes within Tokyo. Moreover, a 20% slope means that for a flat distance of 10 meters, there is a height difference of two meters. In the Edo Era, the major portion of Edo City could be seen from the top of this slope; thus its name. The “Guide of New Selection of Tokyo Landmarks” praises this slope, saying that, rivaling the tower of Atago in the south, almost half of the city can be seen, including the waters off Shinagawa in the far distance…. (excerpt), but, unfortunately, it is now buried in a valley of buildings and that view is no longer possible. However, if you close your eyes, you can imagine the view during the Edo Period and enjoy this slope on our tour of slopes in Minato.
