The 798-meter long Rainbow Bridge, connecting Shibaura with the seaside sub-center across Tokyo Bay, was opened in August 1993 and is Eastern Japanfs longest suspension bridge. As the bridge is more than 50 meters above the waterfs surface, it is connected to the ground with a looped road. The beautiful curve describes an almost perfect 270-meter diameter circle. This is the first time that a loop has been used over the water. The suspended portion of the bridge has a duplex structure: the upper level carries the Metropolitan (Shuto) Expressway, while the Seaside Road and the New Transit Yurikamome. The lower level also carries a 1.7-kilometer-long promenade and pedestrians can enjoy a scenic view of Tokyo Bay. Rainbow Promenade is open 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. from April through October and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from November through March (free of charge). The promenade is closed in case of rough weather.
