At the side of Takamatsu Middle School on the site of the former Hosokawa residence, stands a chinquapin whose trunk at eye level is 7.4 meters around and 17 meters tall (a Metropolitan natural monument). This chinquapin is of the species Castanopsis sieboldii, a giant evergreen that flowers in summer and bears ripe fruit in fall of the next year. The shape of this tree adrift in the ghostly air exudes a feeling of history. In addition to this Castanopsis sieboldii, there are chinquapin, zelkova and other giant trees on the school grounds.
